Overview of our Capabilities

At Carl Stuart Ltd we operate in three major areas:

Below is a summary of each division of the company. You can search by either product or application, using the search engine at the top right hand corner of every page.

Laboratory Division

This division can fulfil the majority of requirements of most laboratories, from the sophisticated analytical techniques used in cutting edge research and development, to the most fundamental of all measurements, such as weighing, used in virtually every laboratory. A look at our online catalogue quickly demonstrates the extent of our capabilities. The laboratory division subdivides into several categories each of which has appropriately qualified staff that are familiar with the various testing regimes.

Fundamental Laboratory Measurements

The backbone of all laboratory techniques are the fundamental measuring practices such as weighing, temperature measurement & control, water quality, liquid handling and microscopy. In this arena Carl Stuart Limited offer a wide variety of services.

Weighing

Carl Stuart Limited supply a vast range of electronic balances from all the major manufactures, facilitating weighing and more. There are balances for the counting of small parts and moisture determinations, based upon weight change. We provide our own in-house calibration facility, where all test equipment is traceable back to National Standards.

Temperature control

Carl Stuart Limited offer water bath and recirculation systems for Internal and External application temperature control from -90ºC to 400ºC. Internal Application Water bath volumes range from 5 to 40L. We, at Carl Stuart Limited, have the expertise to control a 50L Jacketed Vessel at -60ºC. For microbiological work, we have both standard and cooled Incubators, with or without carbon dioxide addition, plus a full range of climate control cabinets for Stability Testing of Pharmaceutical products and more.

Water

All laboratories use water and quality is constantly of paramount importance. From a basic still with a small output, to high volume, low conductivity Ion exchange and R.O. systems capable of producing 18 meghom water, Carl Stuart Limited can fulfil your requirements. At Carl Stuart Limited, we also competently facilitate particulate filtration and water softening, for general water use and washing machines. This includes the supply and qualification of laboratory washing machines.

Liquid Handling

With ever-decreasing volumes, most laboratories need accurate and reproducible methods in handling liquids. The use of bottle top dispensers allows for the rapid dispensing of larger amounts. For smaller volumes, Carl Stuart Limited supply anywhere from single-operation, hand-held pipettes, to programmable diluters and complete XYZ workstations, capable of transferring microlitre volumes simultaneously, such as those required in microtitre plate work.

Environmental Analysis

In offering testing facilities for environmental monitoring, Carl Stuart Limited not only provide equipment for laboratory analysis but also systems for the on-line measurement of many parameters that are required by the regulatory authorities, thus helping to ensure the safety of any environment. The movement towards on line measuring is an obvious progression for parameters, which have been routinely measured in the laboratory for many years now. It provides the added advantage of real time measurements in so far as process changes can be immediately spotted and corrected/adjusted accordingly. It is limited to those technologies which can withstand the rigours of a process environment.

We at Carl Stuart Limited also provide solutions for the measurement of pH, ORP, conductivity, nitrogen, Oxygen, carbon Dioxide, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD), as well as photometric measurements such as turbidity/ suspended solids and microbiological investigation, with both rapid methods and colony counting. For all of these measurements, we offer support, utilising the full extent of our understanding of the technology and calibration /service support for instruments.

Calibration, Service and Spare Parts

The services offered by Carl Stuart Limited fall into three main areas:

  • Laboratory instrumentation at the customer premises
  • on line monitoring instrumentation and sensors at the customer site
  • in-house calibration of items small enough to be returned with a carrier

Laboratory instrumentation calibration and service at the customers' premises

This is one of the most rapidly growing sectors of Carl Stuart Limited and it is driven by the ongoing quality requirement of many laboratories. In the modern laboratory, to be compliant with current regulatory requirements, it is necessary when an instrument is new that an Installation Qualification (IQ) is carried out to confirm that the instrument is what the customer ordered and that all functions are operational. This is followed by an Operational qualification (OQ), confirming that the instrument operational parameters are within the manufactures specifications. A Performance Qualification (PQ) can be carried out as an option if the customer does not want to use their own resources, ensuring that the instrument is working within the customer's specifications and is fit for purpose. Operational qualifications / Performance Qualifications are normally required at fixed intervals throughout the life of the instrument. This can be annually or more frequently depending how critical the application is to the laboratory using the instrument.

An emerging concept is the provision of Total Lab Solutions, whereby we offer Full Contract services for all relevant instruments, in either a particular laboratory or an entire customer site. The main benefit of this type of service is that there is one point of contact for all needs and all documentation is harmonised, ensuring ease of auditability. As a TLS customer, you will benefit from the expertise of the whole team at Carl Stuart Limited for all your service/calibration and instrument/consumable requirements.

Our comprehensive in-house customer management software package allows for full traceability regarding any work undertaken and where requested, issues can be logged by customers on our website. This enables all queries or breakdowns to be handled in real time, on a 24hr- a-day basis.

On Line monitoring equipment at customer site

Many of our customers have on line measurement facilities in their process plant. It is imperative in a process environment that sensors operate correctly and are installed in a duty where they can perform within specifications. Carl Stuart Limited calibrate measuring instruments and confirm that sensors are giving the correct reading. Our capability extends to applications in the pharmaceutical/fine chemical industry, high purity water loops and beverage manufacturing. We cover parameters such as pH, Conductivity, Temperature, Turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, Dissolved Carbon Dioxide, and Dissolved Nitrogen.

Response time is often of paramount importance when ongoing processes are concerned and our contracts reflect the response times required by customers.

In-House Calibration and repair services

Hand-held instruments that are taken into the field under normal use are, by their definition, small and lightweight. Therefore, unless there are a very large number of instruments at one location, it does not make financial sense to visit the site to carry out calibrations or repairs. Often such instruments are capable of being calibrated by the user in the field, using standard solutions. From time to time, however, instruments perform incorrectly or breakdown completely and for this event, we offer a rapid repair and return service using courier services. This results in the instrument being away from its user for the minimum amount of time possible. Carl Stuart Limited offer this service for instruments all over Europe and in particular, provide a first-rate service when validating flow rates on gas flow meters, used in Gas Chromatography.

Process Technology

Carl Stuart Limited's distinguished capabilities in the field of processing mainly relates to the processing of liquids, providing applications to industries such as food & beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, fine chemicals, Active ingredients, electronics, coating and paints, inks and dyes, chemicals, water systems both high and low purity and many more. Carl Stuart Limited also supply products for the on-line monitoring of parameters such as dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH and systems for measuring BOD and COD. Our filtration capabilities extend from mesh and wedge wire screens, to nominally rated cartridge bag and lenticular filters.

Critical applications include absolute rated polypropylene filters, capable of being steam sterilised or autoclaved, with micron ranges from one to seventy. Fully validated membrane filters from materials such as PES, PVDF, PTFE, in porosities as low as .01 micron and even on occasion 0.06, although 0.45 and 0.2 micron are more frequently used for bio-burden reduction and sterile filtration. Many materials are available in both Hydrophilic and hydrophobic forms. Hydrophobic forms are generally used for liquid filtration, and hydrophilic for air filtration or gas venting applications.

In addition to filtration, Carl Stuart Limited also supply Ultra Violet products for treatment of water containing bacteria such as legionella and e-coli, cysts such as cryptosporidium and guardia and even some viruses.
