Surface Science

Through DataPhysics GmbH, Carl Stuart Limited offer an extensive range of solutions to the science of surface chemistry.

The study of liquid/solid characteristics/interaction
We have two, fundamentally different, instrumentation ranges available, addressing two groups of methods.

1. The Optical method(s) - these look at the shape of drops formed, either on surfaces (sessile drops) or hanging into air or another liquid (pendant drops).

The properties of either the liquid or the solid are determined (depending on which is our "known" and which is our "unknown"). And, ultimately, once the properties of both our liquid (applicant) and solid (substrate) are understood we can determine the "work of adhesion" - the energy necessary to expend in order that the two marry together in the required manner.

2. Tensiometric method(s) - this technology is based around a sensitive (7 figure) balance. The force transmitted through to the balance when a test piece, attached to it, is pulled through the surface of a liquid under evaluation, translates into the surface tension of that liquid.

If we wish to determine the properties of solid samples, we can (by attaching test pieces to the balance) pull them through liquids of known surface tension and draw the required conclusions from our balance readings.
