Sample Preparation

This section provides all the instrumentation and accessories required for sample preparation, from mortar and pestles to high-specification automated grinders. It also provides a complete range of test sieves, complete with inspection certificates or calibration certificates.

RETSCH is active in the fields of homogenizing laboratory samples for analysis and particle size analysis of solid substances. Through RETSCH, we offer a range of solutions for milling and homogenizing. For chemical and physical analytical methods such as AAS, NIR, ICP or XRF, it is essential that the specimen is perfectly homogenized to an adequate degree of analytical fineness.

Sample preparation can be as simple as sampling with dip samplers and hand pumps for liquids, or Silo Drills and Zone samplers for powders / granules for homogenous samples. In most cases, however, a reliable and accurate analysis can only be guaranteed by reproducible sample preparation. For these tasks, we offer a comprehensive range of RETSCH mills and crushers for coarse, fine, and ultrafine size reduction of almost any material. Our extensive range of grinding tools and accessories ensure that these instruments provide for contamination-free and reliable sample preparation, prior to laboratory analysis.

In addition, we provide a range ofRETSCH sieve shakers and test sieves for sieving and fractioning. Particle size distribution influences the physical and chemical properties of solids. Therefore, this criterion is of the highest importance in the context of science and quality control. It is only when the size distribution remains constant that a steady product quality can be guaranteed, as the following examples demonstrate:

• The strength of concrete depends on the particle size of the cement
• The taste of chocolate is influenced by the fineness of the cocoa
• The flow characteristics and solubility of washing powders depend on the fineness and particle shape of the basic materials

RETSCH instruments, from the "Assisting" group, optimize and support sample preparation with our mills, jaw crushers, and sieve shakers. They provide reproducible processes with greater efficiency and are characterized by their ease of handling. The fluid bed dryer allows laboratory samples to be dried rapidly and gently. Where larger samples are presented, sample provided may be too large for analysis. In this case, the sample needs to be reduced in some way while ensuring a representative sample is presented for analysis. Sample dividers prepare representative part-samples of powders, granules and many other bulk goods. Pellet presses provide high-quality tablets for spectral analyses.

Feeding and cleaning instruments from RETSCH are suitable for universal use and, due to their functionality and high quality, make routine daily lab tasks much easier.

Through IKA, we offer a range of equipment to aid sample preparation. IKA dispersers can be used in batch operation or for in-line operations. The Ultra-turrex range is competitively priced and has extended volume ranges from 0.5ml up to 50L, with a range of dispersing elements to choose from.

The IKA analytical mill has been a favourite in many laboratories for either impact grinding of hard, brittle or non elastic grinding materials, with a high grade stainless steel beater or cutting grinding, pulverizing soft, fibrous materials with a cutting blade.

We also provide a range of Drying Ovens and Furnaces for sample drying and incineration, prior to preparation for instrumental analysis.
